Aark.io exists to preserve the memory of humanity. We build technology that helps scholars, communities, and institutions record fragile cultural heritage at scale—and we advocate for the people and places that carry it forward.

From ancient rock inscriptions in the deserts of the Near East to monuments at risk from conflict, climate, and neglect, we pair careful fieldwork with frontier AI: reflectance transformation imaging and photogrammetry to capture what the naked eye cannot see, and machine learning to help read what time has nearly erased—always with a human scholar in the loop.

Computational Imaging

Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) and photogrammetry resolve surface relief that is invisible in a single photograph. We light a subject from dozens of angles and reconstruct an interactive surface a scholar can re-light at will—recovering worn inscriptions, tool marks, and carving that the eye would miss.

Our flagship system helps epigraphers read ancient scripts—detecting, labeling, and sequencing glyphs with calibrated per-letter confidence and an honest abstain threshold, so uncertain readings are flagged for a human rather than hidden. It is assistive, never autonomous: a scholar always stays in the loop.

When heritage is under imminent threat, speed matters. We deploy portable capture workflows and geospatial recording to document at-risk sites quickly and rigorously—so that even if the original is lost, the record survives.

Machine learning runs through everything we do—from capture to catalog—but it reports calibrated confidence and abstains when unsure. Honest about what it does not know.

Non-invasive capture, do-no-harm fieldwork, and redundant backups. We never trade the safety of an irreplaceable original for a faster result.

Open & Interoperable

Open standards, open data where it is safe to share, and formats that outlive any single tool or vendor. Knowledge should be free to travel.

Heritage belongs to the people who made it and still live beside it. We build local capacity and respect the communities whose story we help to keep.
